Visits to tuscolane villas in Frascati

Visits to Tuscolane Villas in Frascati

Villa Aldobrandini

One of the many beautiful villas in Frascati is Villa Aldobrandini, the most important above the square Piazza Marconi. The building is by Giacomo della Porta, while the gate is by Bizzoccheri. From the gate there is a avenue with many trees ending to the fountain. On the sides of the avenue there are two minor avenues going to the base of the wall of the terrace, which supports the palace.

Inside the palace, opened only in special occasions, you can find paintings by the Zuccai brothers and as well, some of the characters painted by Domenichino and Cesari. In the big room, Cavalier D'Arpino painted the Sacred Story. The nympheum was once decorated by fountains and water effects by Orazio Olivieri, during the seventeenth century, was described by the first president of the French parliament "one of the most beautiful things that you can see in the world".

Villa Lancellotti

Coming out from Frascati, along the road to Monte Tuscolo, you can find Villa Lancellotti, over the ancient land of Lucullo. In the palace, property of the Mattei family, then, Gonzaga and Piccolomini, some paintings by Carracci are kept. The elegant nympheum, of baroque order, is just in front of the Italian gardens. The facade, restored in 1866, terminates with a terrace, point of privilege to enjoy the views.

The statues and mosaics, from the ruins of Tuscolo complete the villa. Driving along the same road to Tuscolo, you can see Villa Falconieri, built between 1540 and 1550. The central palace was designed by Francesco Borromini, while the inside was painted by Carlo Maratta and a student from the school of Pietro da Cortona. In the park, between the very old cypresses you can see a small rectangular lake.

Nowadays the palace is opened to the public as the Educational European Centre CEDE. During the tour of the villas just at the start of the road to Tuscolo, you can see the small church Chiesa dei Cappuccini near the Monastery. Inside, paintings by Giulio Romano and Girolamo Muriano are kept as well as those by Pomarancio. In the monastery of the church, honoured to the missionary Cardinal Massaia, where his grave is, you can see the Ethiopian Museum.

It is recommended to make the tour by car.
