Visits in Frascati

Frascati is nowadays one of the most known roman hills in the region of Rome. It is a tourist target not only because of being near to Rome but also because of its beautiful territory. The quality of its fields and the climate have made it famous for its wine. In October the picking of the grapes and the making of wine are celebrated in a festival as well. In every corner of Frascati you can see the grapes in big containers and wine just made.

From The Flora Hotel you can walk along the promenade to Piazza Marconi, where the borough Palace is and the museum of the Scuderie Aldobrandini, and its Villa above it. On the right of the square, along the avenue, you can find Villa Torlonia, today a public park. The park offers the Theatre of waters, the fountain of the Candeliere and other smaller fountains. The terrace of the park offers a view over Frascati and Rome to the Tirreno Sea.

From Frascati Piazza Marconi, along Corso Italia, you can reach Piazza San Pietro, where the majestic Cathedral of San Pietro is. The cathedral, from 1610, was restored after the bombs in 1943, by Ottaviano Nonni, so called Mascherino. While its facade from 1698, in baroque order, was by Girolamo Fontana. Once you got in, you can find on your left the grave of Odoardo Stuart, Count of Albany, successor of the English King. On the third altar on the right, you can see the Madonna del Rosario by Sassoferrato and above it a painting by Ferrucci showing Jesus giving the keys to Peter.

Keep on moving along the road towards Piazza del Gesł, you can reach the Church of Gesu', with its facade by Pietro da Cortona. The church was built in honour of San Gregorio Magno and later consecrated to Jesus. Inside there is a unique alley of Latin cross shape. The chapel on the right, has a painting by Colli, a student from Pozzi, like all the rest of the paintings on the walls, and those on the vault are by Andrea Pozzi.

Keeping on along Via Cairoli, turn on the left along Via dell'Olmo, and go down the small steps reaching Piazza San Rocco, where you can see the small church in Romanic style of Santa Maria in Vivario. The church, built on the ruins of the vivarium of a roman villa, is typical of the old centre of Frascati. It has been restored to show the original structure that the Cardinal d'Estouville gave it in the late 1400. The arch and wall still offer the original paintings. Outside, you can see the beautiful bell tower of San Rocco, you can see this from Via dell'Olmo. Behind it you can see a squared tower castle now restored as the shape of the palace of the Duke of York.
